Yahoo says one billion accounts exposed in newly discovered security breach

Yahoo Inc warned on Wednesday that it had uncovered yet another massive cyber attack, saying data from more than 1 billion user accounts was compromised in August 2013, making it the largest breach in history. The number of affected accounts was double the number implicated in a 2014 breach that the internet company disclosed in September and blamed on hackers working on behalf of a government. News of that attack, which affected at least 500 million accounts, prompted Verizon Communication Inc to say in October that it might withdraw from an agreement to buy Yahoo's core internet business for $4.83 billion.

At one point last week, the S&P's loss for 2016 reached 11 percent before recovering to end the month down 5 percent. Global equities got a surprise boost on Friday after Japan's central bank cut a benchmark rate below zero to stimulate its economy. Microsoft shares jumped 5.83 percent on better-than-expected results.

The moves represent a stark rejection of Chief Executive Officer Marissa Mayer's plan to sell the $30 billion Alibaba stake and to revive Yahoo's core Internet unit focusing on growing mobile, video and social media ads. Yahoo could not immediately be reached for comment.

Plans by Yahoo Inc's board to consider selling its struggling Internet business sent the company's shares up nearly 6 percent on Wednesday, as investors cheered a potential new way to separate Yahoo's traditional services from its valuable investment in Chinese Web merchant Alibaba. Yahoo's board is weighing the sale of the Internet business at a three-day board meeting starting on Wednesday, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters. Chief Executive Marissa Mayer's attempts to revive the traditional business have born little fruit, and almost all of Yahoo's market capitalization of about $34 billion is ascribed to its stakes in Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Holding Group Ltd and Yahoo Japan Corp .
